Irish Famine Museum – Cork

For
Final Degree Project
Description

This was a project that I did for my final third year degree project, I had to come up with a brief and a host building. The brief I came up with was an Irish Famine Museum that would house artifacts + literature from the Great Famine (1845-1850) while incorporating contemporary art work + sculpture relating to the famine.

The driving concept of the museum is the floor, it is sculpted to mimic the mass graves that a large percentage of the one million victims of the famine were buried in. Hovering between the granite sculpted floor are oak joists that support a glass floor which represent the deck of a ship. All the elements that display the collection appear to be hovering ghost-like over the floor. The collection is arranged in three stages, Way of Life, Politics, and Emigration.
